Express Entry
The Express Entry program is an online system that allows skilled workers to immigrate to Canada and obtain permanent residency. There are three major immigration programs under Express Entry, each with different requirements.
Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for the Express Entry program, applicants must meet the criteria of at least one of the following federal economic immigration programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Federal Skilled Trades Program
- Canadian Experience Class
Federal Skilled Worker Program
To be eligible to apply as a Federal Skilled Worker (Express Entry Program) in Canada, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Skilled Work Experience: Applicants must have at least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time work experience in the last ten years. The Skilled work experience falls under one of these NOC tEER categories: TEER 0, TEER 1, TEER 2, TEER 3.
Language Skills: You must demonstrate your proficiency in either English or French by taking an approved language test for writing, reading, listening and speaking. Your language test results must meet the minimum score in all four abilities, i.e. CLB7 or higher.
Education: You must have at least a Canadian high school diploma or equivalent foreign credentials.
Selection Factors: You must get a minimum number of points(i.e. 67 points or higher) on the skilled worker point grid based on factors such as your age, education, work experience, language skills and adaptability.
Proof of Funds: You must demonstrate that you have enough money to support yourself and your family members unless you are currently authorized to work in Canada or have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
Admissibility: You must be admissible to Canada, meaning you must not have a criminal record or have serious health problems.
Federal Skilled Trades Program
To be eligible to apply for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (Express Entry Program) in Canada, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Skilled Work Experience: You must have at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the five years before you apply. Your work experience must be in a skilled trade listed in the National Occupational Classification (NOC) under major groups 72, 73, 82, or 92.
Language Skills: You must meet the minimum language level of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking and listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing in either English or French. You must take an approved language test (IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF) and include the results in your Express Entry profile.
Education: You must have either:
- A certificate of qualification in your skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority.
- An educational credential assessment (ECA) report from an approved organization shows that your foreign education is equivalent to a Canadian certificate of qualification.
Job Offer or Certificate of Qualification: You must have either:
- A full-time job offer for at least one year or
- A certificate of qualification in your skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority.
Admissibility: You must be admissible to Canada, meaning you must not have a criminal record, pose a security risk, or have serious health problems.
Canadian Experience Class
To be eligible to apply for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) Program under the Express Entry Program in Canada, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Skilled Work Experience in Canada: You must have at least 12 months of full-time or an equivalent amount of part-time skilled work experience in Canada within the three years before you apply. This experience must have been gained in occupations under NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3.
Language Ability: You must meet the minimum language requirements in English or French for each language ability (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). You need to score CLB 7 or higher on an IRCC-approved language test in English or French if your work experience is from TEER 0 or 1. This requirement changes to CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3. You must include the test results in your Express Entry profile.
Education: You must have either:
- A certificate of qualification in your skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority.

You must be admissible to Canada.
Plan to live outside the province of Quebec.
How to Apply for the Canada Express Entry Program
To apply for the Canada Express Entry Program, follow these steps;
- Check your eligibility requirements for one of the above programs managed through Express Entry.
- Create an online account through the IRCC website and complete your profile.
- Receive your Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) score based on various factors.
- Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence if the CRS score is high enough.
- Submit a complete application for permanent residence within 60 days of receiving ITA.
- Undergo medical examinations and security checks.
- Receive decision on permanent residence application.
- If approved, receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and make arrangements to move to Canada.
Processing Time
The processing time for the Canada Express Entry program can vary depending on various factors, such as the volume of applications received and the complexity of individual cases. It takes around 7 months for Express Entry applications to be processed.
